Painting our nails in juicy, vibrant hues is one of our favourite ways to get into the sunshine state of mind. From pairing crisp whites with our sundresses to swiping on traffic stopping neons that match our bikinis, our nails serve as the ultimate accessory in the summer—which is why it’s essential that you update your nail care to make it appropriate for the season. To help you along your way, we got Vanditha Bolar, the nail technical director at Tip & Toe to share her tips and tricks on giving your nails a summer makeover. Whether you love chic naked nails or prefer the bright, cheery shades that debuted on the spring runways, you’ll find plenty of inspiration (and information!) here.
“When we speak of summer, the first things to come to mind are sunny beaches and assortments of delicious ice creams and summer coolers—perfect inspirations of summer shades. This season, we recommend neons and vivid, bold pastels as nail colours—choose from greens, pinks, powder blues, yellows and oranges. For the adventurous, try coloured French tips, abstract art with neon colours or just striped nail art.”
“Your hands and feet become dry in winter, and in summer they are prone to getting tanned. The best way to prepare your nails for the transition is to go for a thorough manicure and pedicure, which will hydrate your skin while also exfoliating the dead skin and superficial tan. Try the OPI Finger Facial Manicure and Pedicure to breathe life into dull nails and dry skin.”
“The most popular nail shape for summer is squoval; it’s the combination of square and oval shapes and gives a soft look to your fingers.”
“Moisturise your hands and feet daily in the morning and also before going to bed. We don’t even think about protecting our feet and hands from the harsh rays of the sun. Don’t forget to wear sunscreen and always keep a hand cream with SPF handy for frequent application. Another way to keep your nails healthy and happy is to apply cuticle oil and massage near the cuticle area at the root of your nails on a daily basis. To keep your nails looking glossy for long, keep your nails covered with top coat. It is important to apply base coat before polish to avoid the nails from turning yellow because of the colour pigment in the polish. A top coat, on the other hand, helps in extending the life of the polish and gives it a glossy finish.”
“The biggest nail myth we hear all the time is the advice to let your nails breathe. Nails are made of keratin, which is a protein made of dead cells, so it does not need to breathe. But you ideally should give the nails a colour break from time to time.”
“Contrary to popular belief, gel manicures are not harmful. The damage is done when the technician over-buffs the nail layer (which is not really required) while performing the manicure. Get your gel nails done from a salon that has well-trained technicians who can make sure that the mani pedi is done in the right way. With gel polish, your manicure can last from two to three weeks, but with regular polish, you’re lucky if it lasts even five to seven days without chipping. In addition to its staying power, another great benefit of gel manis is that they provide a hard layer of protection over your natural nails, which can result in increased growth and stronger nails. You don’t even need to take special care with gel manicures. You just need to nourish the cuticle area to avoid the skin around your nails from getting dry.”
